Mental health remains an important part of overall well-being, and understanding depression is a key step toward recovery. In an effort to raise awareness and encourage healthy living, Iwacu Recovery Centre organized an educational session on Depression and Recovery, facilitated by Dr. Jean Claude Murekeyimana.
The session brought together participants eager to learn about the realities of depression, its effects on individuals, and the different ways people respond to emotional challenges. Throughout the discussion, participants were reminded that depression is a serious condition that can affect thoughts, feelings, behavior, and daily functioning. However, the message of the day was clear: recovery is possible when individuals receive support and adopt positive coping strategies.
The Discussion Format
To encourage active participation, attendees were divided into two groups. The first group explored Healthy Coping Strategies, while the second group discussed Unhealthy Coping Strategies.
The discussions allowed participants to reflect on real-life experiences and identify behaviors that either promote recovery or make emotional struggles more difficult.
This interactive approach created a safe space for honest conversation and shared learning.
Healthy Coping Strategies
The group discussing healthy coping strategies highlighted several positive ways individuals can manage stress, sadness, and emotional challenges.
Positive Approaches to Recovery:
- Finding meaningful occupations and productive activities
- Engaging in sports and physical exercise
- Singing and listening to uplifting music
- Reading books that inspire personal growth
- Strengthening spiritual well-being through prayer
Participants agreed that these activities help build resilience, improve mood, and create a sense of purpose in everyday life.
Unhealthy Coping Challenges
The second group focused on unhealthy coping strategies and the challenges that often prevent people from moving toward recovery. Their discussion identified negative influences that can increase emotional pain and make it more difficult for individuals to seek help and maintain hope.
Challenges to Overcome:
- Peer pressure and negative social influences
- Bullying and emotional abuse
- Loneliness and social isolation
- Suicidal thoughts and self-harm ideation
The group emphasized the importance of recognizing these challenges early and reaching out for support when facing difficult emotions.
Collective Commitment to Wellness
As the discussions concluded, both groups shared their findings with the larger audience. An important consensus emerged from the session: healthy coping strategies offer a more effective and sustainable path toward recovery and emotional well-being.
Participants collectively committed themselves to practicing healthy coping mechanisms and encouraging others to do the same.
The session ended on a positive and hopeful note, with participants expressing their willingness to become advocates for mental wellness within their families, communities, and peer groups.
Recovery: A Shared Journey
By choosing healthy coping strategies and sharing them with others, participants recognized that recovery is not only an individual journey but also a collective responsibility supported by understanding, compassion, and connection.
Depression is a serious condition, but with the right support systems and positive coping mechanisms, recovery is within reach for everyone.
Together, we can build healthier communities where mental wellness is prioritized and stigma is replaced with support.
Iwacu Recovery Centre continues to provide opportunities for learning, discussion, and growth, empowering individuals to build healthier lives and stronger communities.
